In January 2008, Sun Microsystems announced its intention to acquire the company behind MySQL. While this reinforces Sun's commitment to open source, Hydrasight does not believe that the move will provide any significant long-term commercial return for Sun or any major additional benefits for MySQL users. Furthermore, the acquisition does not necessarily imply that Sun will become the default (or only) choice for commercial support of MySQL. As Oracle has already proven by providing commercial support for Red Hat Linux, a vendor does not necessarily have to own or control an open source technology in order to derive revenue from it.
