The success of the CMO is the success of the entire marketing team. Marketing leaders are judged not only by their personal characteristics but also by the talent of their entire team from top to bottom; CMOs must develop and nurture marketing talent through tactics including: 1) mentoring programs; 2) job rotations; 3) special task force assignments; and 4) best-practices-sharing activities. To be successful, marketing leaders should work closely with HR to identify skills needs for the future, set up a program to train talent, and fill the skills gaps.
