Summary
The migration from legacy data services to IP-based wide-area network (WAN) services in Europe is now largely complete, led by the largest multinational firms. Over the past year we have seen a 20% reduction in the number of enterprises that have no plans for MPLS VPNs, from 33% to 13%. At the same time, the adoption of carrier Ethernet services in Europe has grown very rapidly, and the use of Internet VPNs to carry low-priority traffic has become almost universal. The top WAN project in Europe this year is the upgrading of branch office connectivity to support server centralization projects. Cost leads over quality in the supplier selection stakes, but service quality is the top driver for the use of multisourcing. Europe continues to buy more managed WAN services than North America, driven by cost saving and the simplification of operational management.
