Summary

We looked at the results from Forrester's database of Web Site Reviews to find the top failures on sites in three industries: financial services, retail, and auto manufacturers. What did we find? Illegible text and absent contextual privacy and security policies topped the list of site failures across all three industries. Financial services and retail sites had high failure rates for criteria that evaluate task flow and menu categories. Auto sites exhibited some of the same problems but also failed to use space well. Firms looking to fix flaws uncovered in expert evaluations should concentrate on problems with known solutions first, look across industries for best practices, and apply standards within a consistent process to avoid building flawed designs in the first place.
