Summary

The eco-labeling of IT equipment continues to gain momentum. Firms can take advantage of this to align IT with sustainability. As spending on desktops, notebooks, scanners, printers, and even servers moves under an environmental guarantee, tech spending becomes framed as green spending. Sourcing execs should use the eco-labeling of IT equipment as a means to align IT with wider corporate sustainability objectives. Tread carefully however; as most eco-labels are bound by geography and the stakeholders they cover. Such differences will fade in the future as the regulatory environment evolves and tech vendors seek out competitive differentiation. For now, switching more peripheral IT spending to eco-labeled products represents a quick win for green IT leaders.
