Summary

Oracle is not a company that leaps to mind when you think of knowledge workers — certainly, not in the way that IBM/Lotus or Microsoft might. Yet, with the emergence of the Information Workplace, a next-generation knowledge worker environment, Oracle stands to become a very relevant vendor. With Oracle WebCenter Suite, Oracle has invested in integrated content management, collaboration, and social capabilities, all with an eye toward eventually layering this functionality on top of its broad portfolio of business applications. This tight integration of operational and transactional processes from Oracle business applications with added knowledge-worker-centric functionality from Oracle WebCenter Suite represents a big step toward the Information Workplace for Oracle customers. It's also core to Oracle's application vision going forward. With its JD Edwards EnterpriseOne release, Oracle is beginning to deliver on the vision.
