In July 2021, we looked at Forrester’s consumer data and 98 US retailers across several categories to assess the current state of alternative payment acceptance online. We evaluated digital payment options as well as deferred payment options. PayPal is still the most widely adopted alternative payment method in US retail: 40% of US online adults have used it in the past three months, and 85% of US retailers we reviewed accepted it as a payment method. Deferred payment usage remains low but is growing among both retailers and consumers. The number of retailers we evaluated that offer a deferred payment option online has doubled since early 2020.
