US shoppers are returning to stores. In 2021, 65% of retail growth and 90% of brick-and-mortar retailer sales growth in the US came from physical stores. Marketplaces continue to grow their share of US e-commerce, capturing 58% of US e-commerce in 2021, up from 50% in 2019. And more retailers and brands are turning to Shopify to sell direct-to-consumer. Discount retailers see growth by increasing physical store selling space, and omnichannel retailers adapt stores to increase online sales and fulfil online orders. The 2022 Retail Competition Tracker analyzes 59 US retailers across sales, retail and e-commerce market share, margins, and store selling space.
