In 2027, governments, regulators, communities, and companies will converge on energy: who or what consumes it, pays for it, and controls it; how to make its use transparent and accountable; and how to make it resilient. This is a major shift in focus. Over the past few years, companies have focused their energy transition initiatives on managing demand and containing costs. While energy cost concerns persist, especially due to volatile oil prices, data centers and AI usage have put new pressure on an already constrained resource. Unlimited AI ambition faces a reckoning with limited resources. Winners will shift from growing at any cost to scaling within energy, water, land, and infrastructure limits.
