Summary

Application development and delivery (AD&D) leaders should balance four types of metrics for Agile development: business value, quality, progress, and efficiency. The metrics that AD&D teams use to judge their progress and success reflect a mix of those four types; pre- and postproduction metrics are among the ones they use most. For Agile-proficient teams measuring software development, quality metrics come first, followed by progress metrics like number of story points completed. To improve outcomes, monitor metrics in relation to each other, not in isolation; increasing speed while decreasing quality or business value won’t cut it.
