Summary

Forrester has seen that the mission and operating model of enterprise architecture teams can be characterized along two dimensions: orientation (technology-oriented or business-oriented) and focus (project-focused or strategy-focused). These two dimensions lead to four different archetypes of EA organizations. Each EA archetype has a unique set of characteristics around responsibilities, challenges, and needs, all based on the IT organization's and business organization's expectations and on the areas where the team has been most proficient. Understanding how a firm's EA practice aligns with these archetypes will help EA managers tune their programs to organizational needs.
