Summary

In the increasingly digitized world, having superior data on where your customers go, what they do, and how they use your products is a competitive advantage. However, data management in most organizations is fragmented, governance is immature, and expertise is disconnected from business need. To solve this, CIOs should start by creating an information management (IM) operating model to define the required data services, and then use this to identify capability gaps and develop a plan for filling these gaps. This is the first report in a two-part series that describes an IM model and shows how it was used by technology management leaders in two companies. The second report will show how CIOs can use this model to map business and technology management roles to data functions.
