Summary

The smart grid is the bidirectional supply chain that connects power generation to transmission, distribution, and consumers by using information technology. These smart grids promise greater energy efficiency, reliability, and scale, but because they have interconnected critical components (such as smart meters, sensors, and energy management systems) via an IP network, there are inherent security and risk concerns. Imagine a cyberattack bringing down the entire power grid or hacking into smart meters to compromise control and customer data. The smart grid deployments are happening at a rapid rate, and given the level of both government and private investment, deployments will increase significantly over the next three to five years. Security professionals in all industries, not just the utility industry, need to understand the security vulnerabilities and mitigate them with a comprehensive security strategy, policies, standards, processes, and architecture.
