Summary

The communications industry continues on its path to packetizing real-time communications managed by session initiation protocol (SIP). As a result, SIP trunking is a key component that connects enterprise networks to carrier services. SIP trunking will displace T1 and primary rate interface (PRI) circuits. This technology is beyond the beta stage and could save enterprises money, but infrastructure and operations (I&O) teams need to explore maturity issues. I&O teams can drive cost savings with SIP trunking, but it may not be as dramatic as advertised. This report highlights current SIP trunking adoption, the common risks and issues, critical design consideration and deployment considerations, and recommendations for maximizing potential savings.
