To date, the vast majority of mindshare and activity about improving the IT industry's environmental stance has focused on the life cycle of hardware assets — greening their design, manufacturing, operation, and recycling/disposal. Recently, we have received a number of inquiries from the software side of the industry about its opportunities to help customers accelerate green IT and broader green business initiatives. Software has a huge role to play in green IT, with contributions coming from products and vendors across a range of enterprise software markets.
