Summary

Today, databases and related infrastructure have grown to become a significant part of most IT budgets, and continued growth in the volume of data and the number of database applications threatens to drive their share of the budget even higher. Traditional tools for fighting these rising costs include seeking discounts from database vendors, consolidating database vendors and instances, and outsourcing database administration. However, new approaches such as database compression, database subsetting, administration automation, virtualization, and database-as-a-service (DaaS) are offering new ways to save money, some requiring minimal or no effort and promising huge savings. Application development professionals and database administrators (DBAs) should evaluate these new approaches to reducing database costs and consider making them a part of enterprise database strategy going forward.
