Summary

This report outlines Forrester's vision for communications technology and services sourcing. To ensure effective sourcing of telecommunications and mobility (T&M) services, IT sourcing and vendor management organizations (SVMOs) need to define a future vision that helps reconcile currently divergent business and IT sourcing practices. To do this, traditional sourcing models that treat communication services like commodities must be abandoned. New technologies like session initiation protocol (SIP) for unified communications and collaboration (UC&C) and all-IP and software-defined networks (SDNs) are making the corporate communications infrastructure a strategic business asset for large distributed firms. SVM telecom professionals will need new skills and ongoing training to keep pace with new communications technologies, new delivery models, and new pricing opportunities. In this report, we outline how SVMOs can define an adaptive vision for T&M sourcing, what future sourcing models will look like, and tactics to use to achieve equitable risk sharing.
