Summary

Since we first wrote about Norton and Kaplan's Balanced Scorecard (BSC) method of measuring performance, Forrester has worked with many clients that have implemented IT Balanced Scorecards to measure and communicate IT performance both internally to IT as well as externally to IT stakeholders. The biggest payoff from the BSC comes from improved strategy alignment with the business units and a concrete method for communicating and demonstrating the value added by the IT organization. Forrester believes that by adopting the BSC approach, CIOs can significantly improve relations with stakeholders and close the gap between how IT views itself and how the board of directors, executive management, and business leaders view it.
