Summary

Business cases for IT investments are now the norm rather than the exception. However, projects are still considered individually as discrete investments. Likewise, there is often a segmentation between new application spending, the realm of project portfolio management, existing application maintenance, the realm of application portfolio management, and infrastructure investment. Using Forrester's Technology Investment Matrix, the IT organization can visualize its portfolio of investments similar to the way a financial investment portfolio is analyzed. With this analysis, IT can better ensure business alignment and efficient management of benefits and risks and can more clearly articulate how the IT budget is being spent in relation to corporate strategic goals.
