Telecom carriers' core revenue base, voice and messaging, is under attack from the over-the-top (OTT) business model. Given the financial importance of voice and messaging revenues for carriers, they must prioritize the defense of future cash flow potential from these services. In this report, we outline how telecom carriers can adjust their voice and messaging strategies to the OTT world. The adjustment process opens up opportunities in the form of increased data revenues and joint go-to-market approaches with over-the-top providers. Moreover, successful carriers will build the platform to push context-enabled communications in the form of device and app embedded voice, messaging and video services, and web-enabled communication.
