Confronting demands to deliver customer-facing applications quickly and efficiently, some firms are seeking alternatives to custom coding on application platforms that rely heavily on Java and .NET programming. As they do, these enterprises favor "low-code" platforms over their established application platforms. Enterprise architecture (EA) professionals making platform decisions for their firm need to decide if these new platforms are needed — and where they fit. In our research, we identified five scenarios where low-code platforms can make a difference — and typically drive the choice of a given product. Moreover, we find that most firms use low-code platforms for applications of modest scale and scope, as well as apps that follow well-established user experience design patterns.
