Summary
Internet access has become nearly ubiquitous in many Western countries, where penetration rates today reach as high as 90% of the population. However, robust growth in Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa will add approximately 1.5 billion global online users, or 20% of the total world population, between the end of 2013 and 2019. In many developing countries where PC usage and fixed broadband infrastructure are very poor, mobile Internet adoption will be the main driver for online access. Indeed, the world population of “mobile-only” online users, who access the Internet exclusively via their mobile phones, will grow at twice the annual rate of the entire online user base over the next five years. The forecast includes data for all global regions and 56 individual countries.
