Because public cloud service-level agreements (SLAs) are public documents, they are easily accessible to review for weaknesses in key areas. Understanding them, however, is more challenging. Leading cloud suppliers are turning their attention to the potentially much larger enterprise segment and addressing its preferences. Cloud agreements and SLAs are evolving, but a significant gap still exists between norms in IT outsourcing and public cloud standards, particularly as it pertains to the transfer of financial risk to the supplier. In evaluating cloud SLAs and terms, leave your outsourcing-influenced expectations at the door, and use the public cloud instruments to help guide implementation decisions.
