Senior-Level Managers Assert They Have Higher Data Literacy Levels

How do people rank their own data literacy? Forrester’s 2023 data shows that self-assessment of data literacy varies by manager level, with 75% of executive management saying they have advanced or expert data literacy vs. only 53% of individual contributors. The problem arises when senior leaders and department or business unit directors overestimate their data literacy, potentially leading to decision-making based on incomplete or inaccurate understanding of data. Conversely, workgroup or team leads or individuals rating their own literacy levels lower may indicate a more accurate assessment of their skills and recognition of areas for improvement.
