As futurist Roy Amara said, the impact of any truly transformative technology is overestimated in the short term and underestimated in the long term. Nowhere is this as true as in the case of artificial intelligence. There is little doubt that in the medium to long term, AI will transform all aspects of human life, business, and society. However, in the short term, enterprises have struggled to move past the crescendo of hype surrounding generative AI (genAI) and gain real value and tangible ROI from AI. Several Forrester clients that have been piloting or experimenting with a variety of use cases over the past year are starting to recalibrate, or to scale back, their investments. A few, on the other hand, have found business value and are looking to expand. What factors separate these firms — that have succeeded at deriving early ROI from AI — from those that are still on the journey? Which types of use cases have found more, or less, success?
