Summary

Event processing, business event processing, complex event processing, and various other similar terms are coming into common use by IT professionals and even by business users. Confusion about what each term represents is rife, in part because an increasing number of business requirements is driving demand for event processing, yet it's not always clear which form of event-processing technology to use. Therefore, application development professionals need a taxonomy of event-processing scenarios to guide their thinking about how to approach event processing. An event-processing taxonomy also spurs a common understanding by enterprise architects and business partners about which of the forms of event processing fits differing business needs best and the issues raised by each. Forrester has identified at least six event-processing categories, each of which has distinct value for different types of business applications.
