Summary

Although VMware has significant mind and wallet share in organizations' server virtualization plans, and some show an interest in Xen, many of the servers out there run a Microsoft server OS — and the Redmond giant looks to make up some ground with Hyper-V now in the wild. Interested customers should not just be looking at the hypervisor itself but should be considering the entire server virtualization solution and how it integrates — or doesn't — into their existing management schemes. Hyper-V lacks some advanced features of VMware's ESX server and virtualization platform, but its relatively low cost, integrated physical and virtual management, and ease of implementation might be good enough for many organizations today.
