Summary

Clients issue requests for proposals (RFPs) for a wide range of IT services needs. RFPs are a critical part of evaluating suppliers and ensuring a fair selection process. In many cases, an RFP not only provides the opportunity to evaluate and score potential suppliers in a uniform selection process but also helps the internal team build consensus on what matters in a services provider. The process of writing the RFP and building a scorecard generates useful discussion and decisions about how to prioritize and trade off provider characteristics such as cost, innovation, and technical prowess. It also gives clients the ability to compare prices, receive a binding price from a potential supplier, and get a basis for price negotiation. This document outlines several important components of an effective RFP.
