Summary

The IT application management market aggregates three main segments: mainframe application management, packaged application management, and J2EE/.NET application management. While mainframe application management is a relatively stable area, J2EE and .NET have been the fuel behind market growth for the past several years. This is a market that has seen a lot of consolidation, sometimes several times over: For example, VERITAS acquired Precise Software, then Symantec acquired VERITAS. While we think that these waves of acquisition will slow down, we believe that the time is now coming to integrate application management into the big picture of business service management (BSM). In this game of end-to-end application management, we expect some players to fill the gaps in their management solutions: HP Software, for example, has no mainframe solution to challenge its three major competitors, which are all leaders in this particular area.
