Improving IT governance is on the agenda for many organizations as they attempt to improve the business value that they are getting from their IT investments, increase operational efficiencies, and reduce their risks. Unfortunately, there is a very important stakeholder missing from many of these efforts: business executives. In too many cases, we have seen business executives make the mistake of delegating their responsibilities to IT. All firms need to take three basic steps: Put IT on the agenda of board of directors' meetings, establish an IT steering committee to deal with IT matters, and require business sponsorship of key programs.
