Ambient technology is starting to come out of the lab and concept design stage and is now finding a place with consumers — albeit somewhat geeky ones. Ambient technology offers a complementary device or service approach to today's PC- or digital TV-centered efforts to engage with connected consumers. As such, consumer product strategy professionals at device manufacturers and service providers should look seriously at this emerging category and see what will work for them — while remaining realistic about the barriers ahead.
