Summary

Most enterprises are involved in or planning IT consolidation projects to address cost issues, but those that have made the effort have found that their expectations going in often are hard to quantify and that success is often found along other lines of measurement. Forrester surveyed 246 IT executives and managers at US enterprises about their IT consolidation experiences and plans and found that those with the most experience took a holistic approach to consolidation, leveraged systems vendor and consultancy partners, and explored and were satisfied with myriad approaches to gaining efficiencies. Although all sought to control costs through their consolidation efforts, choosing the right metrics is key, and those chosen varied widely based on experience level.
