Summary
IBM has unveiled its new zEnterprise platform. But unlike previous platform updates, this one is not about traditional mainframe systems refresh, with emphasis on performance, price/performance, and RAS innovations. The new zEnterprise is completely re-architected. It focuses on three core technology components: 1) the zEnterprise 196, which is a more scalable system for large-scale transactional and data serving environments; 2) the zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension, which allows for workload optimized blades; and 3) the zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager, which is a framework that can extend mainframe qualities of service across both hardware environments. Forrester recommends that I&O managers build the business case for the new zEnterprise platform by focusing on five areas of improved economics over previous generations of z: 1) improved performance; 2) enhanced workload optimization; 3) better Linux consolidation; 4) increased support for multiplatform virtualization; and 5) streamlined IT operations.
