Summary

The concept of observability has existed for decades, with roots in the science of control theory that date back to the 1960s. There has been a resurgence in the use of the term in IT, but it still lacks clarity. This report introduces the Forrester Observability Reference Architecture, which identifies the supporting technology stack and components necessary for organizations to implement an enterprise-class IT observability solution and simultaneously provides technology vendors with a product capability roadmap.
