Capacity management is a process aimed at controlling the IT infrastructure in such a way that resource shortages are anticipated and corrected before they occur, thus maintaining service-level agreements (SLAs) contracted with the business users. For managing today's tightly coupled systems and virtualized environment, it's important to establish a capacity management function. This function cuts across the different silos of expertise in the organization to support the processes of capacity management. A well-defined function can only exist with a functional owner who is measured on the ability to provide a holistic and accurate plan of the infrastructure needed.
