Summary
Decentralized digital identity (DDID) — also known as self-sovereign identity (SSI) — is a new architectural approach for managing identities. After traditional or digital identity verification, identity issuers, such as governments or universities, can issue verifiable claims (VCs) that users store in a digital wallet. Users can present the VC’s attributes selectively to verifiers for authentication or authorization. DDID represents a much broader and richer set of use cases than traditional centralized identities. This report reviews DDID trends, architectures, and use cases.
