Summary

Forrester reviewed the search functionality on the corporate Web sites of the top 50 US companies according to revenue. Almost all of the search engines executed queries very quickly, but the majority of sites barely passed our test. We encountered a few serious errors, such as broken links and top search results dated from 1999, as well as some best practices, such as parametric searching features that allow users to narrow their results. To improve on-site search, information and knowledge management (I&KM) professionals should test their integrated search functionality against what can be retrieved using popular Web search engines against their sites. Then they should start optimizing.
