Companies want to lower their mobile voice and data services budgets and they're turning to dual-mode phones to do it. Dual-mode phones are mobile handhelds that can transmit voice calls over traditional cellular service and also in-house WLAN networks. When a user is within range of an access point, the call will seamlessly hand off to voice over IP (VoIP) over the WLAN, thus saving the company some telecom budget. So what's the problem? Because this threatens the carriers' fixed-line business, devices are only selectively being released by the carriers. As a result, enterprise buyers should consider turning to alternative mobile device suppliers to get their hands on these dual-mode phones.
