US federal government AI policy requires that agencies “advance AI governance and innovation while managing risks from the use of AI — most especially in those affecting the rights and safety of the public.” But the mandate requiring the appointment of a chief AI officer (CAIO) at all federal agencies is what signals a concerted effort to integrate AI into government operations. This report uses Forrester survey data to outline of the current state of AI strategy and leadership in the public sector in the US, the UK, and Australia. Public sector mission, business, and technology leaders can use this report to help measure their progress on AI strategy and leadership.
