Summary

Even as social media adoption surges across the enterprise, security and risk (S&R) professionals have yet to fully understand and mitigate associated legal, compliance, and security risks. S&R professionals have taken steps to mitigate many of the security risks, such as leaking sensitive information, through a combination of policy and specific security controls. However, the vast majority of S&R professionals have yet to address the legal and compliance risks of social media to their organization. What may not be obvious yet is that the same retention management rules that govern email, instant messaging, and other forms of electronic communication also govern social media communication. S&R professionals must quickly come to grips with the compliance and eDiscovery implications and begin developing an appropriate response.
