Driven by the explosion of edge and IoT devices, asset management has become exceedingly complicated, and the security implications of this fragmented asset environment are daunting. Technology stakeholders must understand the different asset categories and overlapping lifecycles to maximize the economic productivity of enterprise investments, manage technical debt, and control attack surfaces. In this report, we outline and define the five main types of assets, identify the key characteristics of each asset category, and highlight the areas of overlap and dependencies among these asset categories.
