The Impact Of Emerging Technology In 2030 On mCommerce Experiences In Retail

Oct 17, 2019

Summary

Mobile has already transformed retail by adding proximity and immediacy; most visits to US eCommerce sites now happen on mobile devices, and consumers complete a double-digit percent of transactions on mobile devices. While they won’t serve as substitutes for stores, mobile technologies in the future will be even more pervasive throughout the shopping journey; impact even more subcategories within retail; and be more helpful and engaging for shoppers as well. Mobile devices will enhance store associates’ ability to offer personalized service and recommendations for customers, increase store operational effectiveness, and reduce the overall cost of serving shoppers and running stores and other physical environments. With the help of sensors and machine learning, retailers will more effectively anticipate consumer need for goods (especially replenishment goods), going far beyond items with predictable consumption patterns like prescriptions. Mobile devices will also serve as a consumer’s identity, letting them purchase in checkout-free stores at scale or share their requirements and past purchases with a new apparel retailer in exchange for more personalized service.
