Enterprise content management (ECM) has been alive and kicking as a technology market for several decades. Looking ahead, some things will remain the same — like the fundamental drive to reliably manage and find content. But growth in content types — like activity streams from enterprise social platforms, and the need to access content in the moment from the mobile world — will fundamentally alter the ECM landscape. Customers and employees, operating in a social and mobile world, expect easy mechanisms to create and consume content and automated approaches to the duty of protecting it. Ongoing requirements to manage risk and ensure compliance will continue to drive interest in content management as analytics reduce traditional burdens that have inhibited adoption. As paper processes shift into digital processes, many enterprises now outsource noncore and declining print processes.
Providers need to embrace lighter cloud solutions and drive them toward industry solutions but most importantly devise a way to add a layer of security that makes enterprise customers comfortable. At the same time, enterprises need to push previously trapped corporate content securely outside the firewall to customers and partners. Look for developing skills and understanding of enterprise search, metadata extraction from capture, auto classification, dynamic learning from forms processing, and analytics that will reshape the ECM industry.
