In response to claims that the US is facing a technology talent gap, Forrester analyzed US wage, labor, education, and geographic data and concluded that the perceived tech talent shortage is mostly hype.
According to Forrester’s Andrew Bartels, the US tech talent supply is aligned with demand because the number of technology jobs is rising while pay remains stagnant. Forrester predicts that the number of workers in tech jobs will reach 4.5 million by 2018, rising at an exceptionally high 3.4% growth rate compared with the US average. Salaries for these professions will have only grown at an average rate of 2.2% from 2011 to 2018, which is only slightly higher than the estimated 1.9% increase of all US wages during the same time period.
Other factors Forrester’s research considers is that colleges are turning out tech grads faster than companies are creating tech jobs, and self-taught talent is flooding the tech labor market with new resources.
