What’s a reasonable number of apps for a brand to offer its customer base? Fewer than three is the norm for nearly half of the digital business pros recently surveyed by Forrester. But an astonishing 9% say their firm offers more than 21 apps to the market. More is not always better, writes Forrester in new research, which examines the current state of mobile app development. Particularly when 75% feel that their apps aren’t updated as often as is needed.

Why the struggle? A lack of resources — not budget — to natively support multiple platforms and build infrastructure services inhibits pace. Half of those surveyed have fewer than five developers in house — leaving many teams reliant on middleware and third parties to fill their resources gap.
