Cognitive computing will fundamentally transform healthcare over the next five years and will reach global scale by 2025, according to a new Forrester report.

Why? Because these applications leverage vast amounts of disconnected information through artificial intelligence technologies like machine learning and natural language processing. As a result, healthcare providers will improve clinical automation and care management and discover new therapies for complex health conditions. Additionally, the technology will more effectively identify waste and fight fraud — factors that cause the US healthcare system to lose more than $362 billion annually.

While Forrester writes that the cognitive computing won’t reach commercialization until 2019, healthcare CIOs would be smart to start experimenting with the tools and platforms now to stay ahead of the curve.
