Forrester: Tech Leaders Must Develop A “Bring-Your-Own-AI” Management Policy To Maximize AI’s Benefits And Limit Its Risks
Forrester’s new report, Bring-Your-Own-AI Hits The Enterprise, reveals that more than a quarter of global AI decision-makers indicate that 51% to 75% of their employees will use generative AI technology by the end of 2024. Whether it’s generative AI tools like ChatGPT, AI-infused software, or AI-creation tools, employees are already using consumer AI services that their businesses don’t own. As a result, tech leaders must manage the regulatory, governance, privacy, third-party vendor, and security challenges that the rise of BYOAI — employees using any form of external AI service to accomplish company-related business regardless of whether it’s sanctioned by the business — introduces.
Forrester’s report offers best practices for tech leaders to navigate these challenges and help them create a policy for maximizing AI’s benefits while limiting workers’ unapproved usage of the technology. Forrester recommends CIOs and other tech leaders create a formal BYOAI management strategy that aligns with organizations’ existing AI governance efforts, focuses heavily on communication, emphasizes the balance between AI opportunity and threat, and covers four key areas
- Security and privacy: What steps employees must take to safeguard sensitive information.
- Literacy: What employees need to know about AI to use it responsibly at work.
- Usage: How to use BYOAI services for day-to-day activities.
- Support: How IT will manage BYOAI going forward.
