Generative AI is changing the economics of B2B fraud. It enables criminals to create convincing supplier communications, impersonate executives, fabricate documents, and personalize business email compromise attacks faster and at lower cost. Agentic AI can push this further by automating multistep activities such as researching targets, generating messages, and adapting outreach at scale.

The threat is already escalating. 77% of fraud professionals reported an increase in deepfake social engineering over the previous two years, while 75% saw growth in generative AI document fraud and forgery. Only 7% considered their organizations more than moderately prepared for AI-fueled fraud.

This is the context for Basware’s acquisition of Trustpair announced this week and the deal responds to an increasing need to validate more than the invoice itself, including supplier identity and payment details.

Trustpair Adds Supplier And Payment Validation To Basware’s Controls

Traditional AP controls focus primarily on whether an invoice is legitimate, accurate, approved, and free from duplication. But a fraudster does not necessarily need to alter an invoice. By impersonating a legitimate supplier and changing its bank details, an attacker can redirect an otherwise valid payment.

Trustpair addresses this risk by verifying supplier identity and bank-account ownership during onboarding and account changes, continuously monitoring supplier data, and checking payment files before funds move. Its platform supports supplier and account validation across more than 190 countries.

That extends Basware’s controls beyond invoice integrity into supplier and payment validation. Basware has historically focused on areas including duplicate payments, overpayments, pricing errors, missed discounts, refunds, and other forms of financial leakage. Trustpair adds controls around who is being paid and where the money is going.

The Value Will Depend On How Well Basware Combines The Data

The acquisition also creates an opportunity to connect different types of fraud signals. Basware has processed more than 2.5 billion invoices across a network of more than 20 million suppliers, while Trustpair brings more than 10 million validated supplier-to-bank-account pairs and nine years of fraud history.

Connecting invoice behavior with supplier identity and payment-destination data could improve fraud detection. For example, unusual invoice activity may carry more significance when paired with a recent bank-account change or inconsistencies in supplier identity.

But the size of the combined datasets will not by itself determine the value of the acquisition. Basware will need to show that it can translate those signals into accurate and explainable fraud decisions without creating excessive false positives or adding unnecessary friction to legitimate payments.

Trustpair’s Independence May Help Preserve Its Platform-Neutral Role

Basware plans to keep Trustpair operating independently while cross-selling it to its own customers. This matters because Trustpair already integrates with procurement, ERP, and treasury platforms including Coupa, SAP, Ivalua, and Kyriba. Its partnership with Coupa was expanded in April 2026.

Maintaining independence reduces concerns that customers must select Basware across the entire procure-to-pay process to access Trustpair. An enterprise could continue using Coupa for procurement, for example, while adopting Trustpair for supplier and payment validation.

For that model to remain credible, Basware will need to provide customers and partners on competing platforms with comparable product access, integration support, and roadmap commitments. If it does, Trustpair can remain a cross-platform fraud-control layer while also giving Basware another capability to offer its existing customers.
